What Is a Senior Living Community?
If you’ve reached the age of 55 or beyond, you may not find your current home the joy to live in that it was when you first moved in. For instance, you may be tired of doing all the maintenance that goes with homeownership. Or you may wish you didn’t have to go up and down so many stairs. Whatever the reasons for your dissatisfaction, you may be considering a move to a senior living community.
You may be unsure, however, about the options available to you. You also may have questions about the differences between a senior living community like Shelby Park Manor and an assisted living facility. Here, then, are the answers to some of the most common questions.
Enhanced Independent Living
As its name implies, a senior living community is a place where people 55 and older come to LIVE – safely, comfortably and autonomously – in their own apartments. While your Shelby Park Manor neighbors are people whose ages and interests likely are similar to your own, you need not socialize with them unless and until you want to. When you do, our gathering rooms and exercise trails provide the perfect places to meet and enjoy each other’s company. In addition, our gathering rooms make delightful and elegant places in which to entertain your family and friends.
In other words, you have complete control over your life, just as you do now. Unlike an assisted living facility, our staff provides no medical care or nursing support. Instead, we’re here to serve you, not take over your life. We provide all exterior and common area maintenance and will be happy to help you arrange transportation if you don’t wish to drive, but we’ll never hover over you with incessant reminders to take your medications, keep your doctor appointments, eat healthy meals or exercise regularly. We treat you like the competent adult you are, fully capable of cooking your own meals, cleaning your own apartment, doing your own laundry and running your own life. We simply provide you with an elegant, spacious and convenient place in which to do it.
One of the biggest advantages to a senior living community is its affordability. Think of it as living in your own condo – but one where you make no long-term investment or pay condo fees. Instead, you rent the Shelby Park Manor apartment of your choice, your options being:
- A one-bedroom unit
- A one-bedroom plus den unit
- A two-bedroom unit
All of our apartments include the following amenities:
- Spacious living space
- Outdoor patio or balcony space
- Full kitchen
- Air conditioning
- Cable ready
Many also come with a covered carport. In addition, if you choose an upper-level apartment, you’ll love our easy-access elevators.
Keep in mind, however, that we’re not an assisted living facility or a nursing home that provides health care services. Instead, we focus on giving you a quiet, convenient home that supports and enhances your active lifestyle. You therefore pay your rent yourself out of your own funds. Medicare and Medicaid do not cover senior living community costs.
Safety and Security
Rest assured that your Shelby Park Manor senior living community gives you both the freedom you want and the safety and security you need. We take our residents’ safety very seriously. Consequently, all of our entrances are secured. In addition, the Shelby Township police and fire departments are close by, as are three hospitals where you can quickly obtain medical services if you suffer an injury or have a medical emergency.
So, is a senior living community right for you? Only you can decide. Hopefully we’ve answered some of your main questions so you can make an informed decision.
